If your car was made before 2021, yes. However, most new U.S. vehicles now use R1234yf. While R134a remains widely available at retailers like AutoZone, prices are steadily rising as HFC production quotas continue to drop.
It is being rapidly phased out for new construction. To meet "Green Building" and LEED certifications, the majority of new U.S. chillers are transitioning to R513A or R1234ze, which offer much lower environmental impact.
Extreme Warning: You will experience a massive drop in cooling capacity (approx. 40%). R134a is a medium-pressure gas, whereas R404A is high-pressure. Your freezer will likely never reach the target temperature, and the compressor will burn out attempting to compensate.
